‘How Bright Appears The Morning Star’
St. James’ Lessons and Carols Service December 10
“Rabbi, we’ve been waiting for the Messiah all our lives, wouldn’t this be a good time for Him to come?” So asks Motel Kamzoil, the tailor in “Fiddler on the Roof,” the Tony-winning and highly acclaimed Broadway musical.
The constable has just delivered the edict that every person of the Hebrew faith must leave their little village of Anatevka – in three days. Difficult days make everyone look for the coming of One who can right all wrong, the Messiah.
Advent invites us to cast our vision heavenward in expectation of The Messiah, Jesus Christ’s return. Just as the Bethlehem star heralded Christ’s birth, the rising of the Morning star will illumine His return.
The choir of St. James’ Episcopal church and singers from the community are joining voices to present an Advent service of Lessons and Carols Sunday, December 10, at 3 pm. at the church, across the street from H-E-B.
Scripture and music will relate the story of salvation – looking for its completion with Christ’s return. Composers from the Middle Ages through Baroque to Contemporary have used plainchant, Advent carols, hymns and anthems to express hopes and dreams like Motel’s, that the Messiah would come.
The music will be directed by Don Kirby with Mary Ann Hatfield accompanying on the Johannus organ and the recently acquired Steinway piano, with its exceptional sound quality.
The choir and all attending will have the opportunity to unite in singing and sharing the expectation of celebrating Christ’s birth, and the yearning for His return.
Hearts will be lifted upward to see “how bright appears the Morning Star.”
