Hogs on the Move in Muldoon
The hogs are back in herds. There have been multiple sightings of large herds, estimated around fifty hogs traveling through the area. One sighting was by Pat Lyons on his daily three mile morning walk. He reported that the herd crossed the road in front of him “running and not making a sound.”
Another report of a large group hogs traveling across the road was made by Antoinette Joplin on Wallace Road. These hogs crossed in front of her and her dog River while they were walking later part of the day. The hogs did not seem fazed by her and River’s being there. They were just traveling their trail.
Even the hogs are feeling the effects of the dry weather. They are seeking water and food. Keep aware when out and about.
Out and About
Ron and Pam Knotts were running errands recently in Austin when they decided to reach out to Pam’s brother, Ray Langenberg for an impromptu lunch. Busy schedules usually prevent these get together gatherings, but everything fell together in place and they agreed to meet at Trudy’s, a Mexican restaurant south of downtown Austin. This place was new to the group and turned out to be a hit with them. The timing was perfect for this meeting as an upcoming family reunion needed some planning and most of the big issues were settled. The date has been put on the calendar so now to arrange the caterer and find some raffle prizes. Hopefully the weather will be cooler in September, but whatever the temperature the family will enjoy renewing old connections.
Train Update
There has been some activity around the train derailment area. Crews have been working on the two engines on the siding. They lifted the front of one engine and were doing repairs this past week. With this work there have been a number of vehicles parked along the road in the area of the Muldoon Mercantile. Please use caution when traveling in that area keeping aware of equipment and personnel working there.
School
With the beginning of August, area schools will be starting soon. Please start watching out for a change in the traffic patterns and maybe the addition of new drivers traveling to school. The teachers will be starting in the beginning of August. In a few weeks the buses will start running and remember not to pass a bus when the lights are flashing.
Very Hot and Dry
Muldoon has been seeing some very hot and dry conditions lately with temperatures over one hundred almost every day. This has really dried out what moisture was in the ground and cracks are forming. The grass has also taken a beating and is getting crispy and will ignite very easily.
These conditions are why the county enacted a burn ban. It does not take much to set off a fire and the local fire departments have been working overtime. Now is a good time to volunteer, say thanks, or make a donation.
