Located at 631 N. Main St. in Schulenburg, the Schulenburg Historical Museum stands as a testament to the town’s rich history and the pioneering spirit of its early settlers. Housed in a building constructed in the early 1900s, this museum was originally the Wolters Mercantile, a cornerstone of the community’s commercial life. The museum was founded in 1988 by John Wolters, the great-grandson of Robert A. Wolters and Anna (Bohms) Wolters, prominent citizens of Schulenburg, along with his wife, Karen.
The museum’s origins are deeply rooted in the Wolters family’s legacy. Robert A. Wolters and his wife Anna were influential figures in the town, contributing to its growth and development. When John and Karen Wolters opened the museum, they did so with a vision to preserve and share the history of Schulenburg with current and future generations. The museum offers visitors a chance to step back in time and experience the history of Schulenburg, a town founded in 1873 when the railroad came through the area. Schulenburg was named after August Louis Von Schulenburg, who settled in the area in 1867. In a significant contribution to the town’s development, he sold 450 acres of his land and his house to the railroad, facilitating the growth of the community.
