Historical Commission to Meet Monday, May 16

The May meeting of the Fayette County Historical Commission is scheduled for Monday, May 16 at 6 p.m. at the Round Top Area Historical Society Building, 397 E. Mill St. Round Top.

After a short business meeting, our program will be the “The Groce Log House” presented by the Round Top Area Historical Society.

A PowerPoint display on this early Texas structure built for Jared E. Groce, who was the Father of Texas Agriculture and the largest property owner and greatest cotton producer in Texas. This house was located along the Brazos River and saved from destruction in 1967 by Faith Bybee and restored in 1980 near Round Top. The house was up for Texas registration and monument status during the 1980s and on national basis before the National Registry of Historic Places.

The Texas Declaration of Independence was probably drafted in this log house and it served as the Capital of the Republic following the Convention of 1836 at Washington-on-the-Brazos.

Refreshments will be served.
