Habitat For Humanity Opening a Home Supply Store in Schulenburg
Fayette County Habitat for Humanity is doing a major remodel on their garage sale fundraisers.
On June 4 the housing organization will be celebrating the grand opening of Habitat Home Supply, a resale shop in Schulenburg. With more than 4,000 sq. ft. of shopping area excess revenue generated by the store will help support Habitat’s housing mission in Fayette County.
Habitat has had numerous garage sales over the last few years, but it was taking a toll on volunteers according to Executive Director Kenny Couch, “As our garage sale fundraisers became more and more popular it became harder on our volunteers to empty, price, and set out an entire 40 ft. shipping container worth of items only to reload it at the end of each sale, some of those summer sales were absolutely brutal. We were on the lookout for a space that would allow us to shift our garage sale indoors without having all of the overhead costs that a traditional store would include.”
So when Habitat’s board members were driving through Schulenburg in search of a lot to build a new home on, they ran across a warehouse with a moving truck outside and the boxes were headed in the right direction. After a bit of sleuthing, they reached out to the owner, Eamon McCourt, and let him know they were interested in renting it if he was open to it.
“Mr. McCourt has been an amazing partner from the moment we reached out to him. We’re blessed to have supporters like him in the communities we serve. We were in the space so much quicker than we expected that it really allowed us to get much more organized and prepared for our grand opening,” Couch said. “Overall this wouldn’t have been possible without support from Eamon McCourt, Ron Langhamer, Tom Elliott, Richard Copeland, Ivan Muras, and Harvey Oeding. We were also blessed to have the La Grange 4-H Club come out and spend a day with us organizing, pricing, and cleaning in preparation for our grand opening. As an organization, we’re incredibly lucky to get to serve a community that supports our mission so enthusiastically.”
Habitat Home Supply will sell gently used non-upholstered furniture, jewelry, small appliances, home décor, home goods, and just about anything you’d find in a hardware store. The store does not accept clothing, shoes, purses, mattresses, or upholstered furniture.
Located at 825 N. Main St. in Schulenburg, Habitat Home Supply will accept donations every Friday from 8 am-4 pm. While help may be available, donors are asked to provide the manpower to unload larger items. The store will be open to shoppers on the first Saturday of each month from 9 a.m. -2 p.m.
