Tomato Harvest
Erin Urban harvested around 30 lbs. of tomatoes last month. Her secret? “The clear winners for longevity last year are Yellow Brandywine and Roma tomatoes. Both are indeterminate and will run, ramble and become gangly over the season. If you can keep the suckers (offshoots) trimmed to a minimum you will have larger, late-season fruit,” stated Urban.
Another secret is her northfacing garden. “My raised-bed garden is on the north side of my house and receives full shade by 3 p.m. in the summer. This increases the chances of my pepper plants and tomatoes healthily managing the intense summer heat. While you can plant a second crop in the fall, you will have a larger yield if you can maintain your spring plants. “I’m open to plant trading this coming spring. For some reason, the tomato plants given to me produced the best.”
