Pin Oak Cemetery Assoc.

The semi-annual clean-up and meeting of the Pin Oak Cemetery Association was held Saturday, April 15. The association is dedicated to preserving and maintaining the grounds of the historic site.

The Pin Oak Cemetery is filled with lots of interesting history. Two soldiers from the 1842 Battle of Salado made their way to the community of Black Jack Springs. Despite the best care by Dr. Kenzie Routh, both passed away. Dr. Routh allowed them to be buried in the Routh family cemetery on his property, which is now Pin Oak Cemetery. Men who fought Santa Anna at San Jacinto along with many relatives of the Speed and Cherry families are buried there as well.

After several hours of mowing, weed-eating, and caring for cemetery plots the current president, George Reyes, called the meeting to order. In attendance were vice president John Coppedge, George’s wife Cindy and Don and Mary Kirby. Three sisters, descendants of Rufus and Dalilah Salinas – Theresa, Norma Jean and Catherine – were first-time visitors.

Seeking information about her ancestors, Theresa Sampson discovered she was a fifth generation descendant of Rufus Salinas. Thanks to the resources of the internet she learned he was buried at Pin Oak Cemetery in Muldoon. She persuaded her sister Norma Jean to join her on the trip from California to Muldoon. They met up with their sister Catherine, now living in San Antonio, and together came to visit the resting place of their ancestors and other relatives and learn more about their family history.

George Reyes is also a descendant of Rufus Salinas and has gathered quite a lot of genealogical data, pictures and stories about the family. A pot-luck lunch was shared after the meeting. The cemetery was resplendent with wildflowers and the beautiful day was a blessing to all who came out.

First Grandchild

Darrell and Dana Kulak were so excited on Wednesday when the much anticipated first grandbaby arrived. Henry Alexander Kulak made his appearance on April 19, weighing in at seven pounds three ounces and measured twenty and one quarter inches long. His parents had a baby shower just recently in Muldoon and so it was not too soon.

Henry’s very proud great-grandfather is Devon Boehnke. Devon was waiting for this seventh great-grand to arrive with baited breath. He is still waiting for two more great-grandbabies on the way this year, which will make it an exciting year for him.

Weather

Muldoon saw some crazy weather this past week. There were a couple rain showers that came through, but it was on Saturday that the wildest weather blew through. Hail fell all around the area. Some up to golf ball size hit the ground. Strong winds and a heavy rain shower accompanied the storm. It did not last long, but had everyone talking about the hail and the size of the hail.
