Fourth of July Celebrated in Muldoon
Saturday, July 2, Muldoon celebrated the 4th of July and our nation’s independence. The crowd was smaller than in years past, but this was the first time in three years that Muldoon tried to gather to celebrate Independence Day.
The parade was fun even if it was small. The American Legion sent a strong group of gentlemen to carry the flags and even had a truck with veterans to help lead the parade. The parade had lots of Muldoon Fire department fire trucks on display. The Texas Forest Service even sent out a truck to participate in the parade which was nice. To round out the parade was a UTV with loads of decorations and tons of candy to toss to those who came out to watch and cheer.
The auction to raise money to help with maintenance of the park buildings raised around $3,000 and collected about $600 in donations all to help take care of this community centerpiece. And the basket that the Muldoon Museum auctioned off brought a $100. This was great for as small of a crowd that gathered on the bright sunny Saturday.
Out and About
Debra and John Schwartzenburg spent the 4th of July weekend at their nephew Timothy Schwartzenburg’s wedding in Cannonsburg, Pennsylvania, outside Pittsburg, to Rachael Evans. Tim is the son of John’s brother and sister in law, Irving, and Kayleen Schwartzenburg. They enjoyed family time and seeing different and cooler countryside.
The crazy heat has kept Ron and Pam Knotts at home most days in the recent weeks, so they are working on travel plans for later in the year. They did hear about a trip taken by Pam’s brother, Ray Langenberg who met them on a recent Sunday at Flatonia Baptist Church. After the service they went to lunch at Robert’s Steakhouse and spent some time catching up on family news. Ray and his wife Christy had taken a trip in June to the Pacific Northwest and Pam was curious to know the sights they had seen as she hopes to plan a California trip. During the lunch they shared stories about Ron’s mom, Bettye Knotts, who passed away recently. After lunch Ray came back to the house to continue the visit and see the cows. Ron broke out the cattle cubes and the guys enjoyed feeding and discussing livestock. On the way home Ray reported a brief stop at Weikel’s to buy some poppy seed rolls, his favorite.
Neighborhood Watch
During these summer months please continue to be aware of what is going on around you in the area. Report anything out of place or strange. Call your neighbor is you see someone on his place to let them know. Better to let them know that someone who has permission is there, than to let someone who does not have permission to possibly do damage or steal something. It is through neighbors helping neighbors we can keep Muldoon safe.
It is also a good idea to check on your senior neighbors to make sure they are staying cool in this hot weather. Heat has been building and this is tough on those who are of a “certain age.” We need to take care of each other as neighbors and friends.
