“We continue to work on the infrastructure of our city, including roads, water, sewage, and safety,” stated City Councilman Neal Doty. “The procurement phase of a project to install an emergency power generator on our water distribution system should begin soon. This generator would allow for continued operation of the water supply to our city customers in an emergency. We’ve received funds for this project from the American Rescue Plan that we applied for as a city and from funds that were awarded as a result of applications submitted to the county.”

Jamie Moreau

Jamie Moreau was elected Justice of the Peace (JP) for Precinct Two back in March, but just recently settled into her Fayetteville office. Moreau was asked to share the role and responsibilities of her new position. It began with extensive training In the Texas Justice Court Training Center at Texas State University and will be ongoing. “I’ve been nothing but impressed with the training and it’s been tremendously helpful,” stated Moreau. “When I’m not in court and handling my other duties, I train continually. My clerks, Elizabeth and Donna, are extremely experienced and are training me as well.”

It takes a unique skill set to tackle the numerous responsibilities of a JP, a few of which include presiding over criminal and civil courts, eviction cases, serving as a magistrate, conducting inquests, and performing weddings. “The JP courts are referred to as a low-level court. I think of this position as the welcome door to the justice system. One of my duties is to serve as magistrate at the jail on some weekends, ensuring there is a probable cause, reading rights and setting bond. This applies to anyone that lands in the county jail,” stated Moreau. “Inquests are another large part of my role. I determine cause and manner of deaths in my precinct and certify the death certificates. I’m interested in meeting the hospice caretakers and funeral directors. There are a lot of players involved.”

Moreau was gifted with a beautiful portfolio from former JP, Terri Ross. Terri had previously passed it on to Judge Coufal. “It belonged to Terri’s father. It’s used for weddings and inquests. I take all my notes in there and carry forms in it that I need throughout the precinct. I’m following in some important footsteps. If anyone knows how to run this office, it’s Judge Coufal. Judges Charles Zapalac and Kyle Hartmann have been very welcoming and helpful. We’re using a lot of psychology and discernment to really hear both parties and pay close attention to what facts are important. I truly enjoy dealing with different issues every day. I do want to point out that neither I nor my team provide legal advice. That’s a fine line I’m very cautious about. It wouldn’t allow for a fair court proceeding.” For more information on the role of Justices of the Peace in our county, go to: https://www.co.fayette. tx.us/page/fayette.Justice FISD
