The board of the Greater Fayetteville Chamber of Commerce appreciates everyone who attended the mixer last week at the Rohde Bait Shop. The Rohde family made everyone feel welcome. The delicious food, the photo booth and the comradery made a very hot day much nicer. And no one would even recognize the old bait shop.

Recipe
What to do with all those wonderful summer tomatoes this year...here’s a thought: Quick Fresh Tomato Sauce, makes about 2½ cups.
Ingredients
• 5 pounds tomatoes
• ¾ teaspoon salt
• 2 tablespoons olive oil
• 1 tbs. tomato paste
• 1 garlic clove, halved
• 1 basil sprig
• 1 bay leaf Directions: cut tomatoes in half horizontally. Squeeze out the seeds and discard, if you wish. Press the cut side of the tomatoes against the large holes of a box grater and grate tomato flesh into a bowl. Discard skins. You should have about 4 cups.
Place tomato pulp in a low wide saucepan over high heat. Add salt, olive oil, tomato paste, garlic, basil and bay leaf. Bring to a boil, then lower heat to a brisk simmer.
Reduce the sauce by almost half, stirring occasionally, to produce about 2½ cups medium-thick sauce, 10 to 15 minutes. Taste and adjust salt. It will keep up to 5 days in the refrigerator or may be frozen.
The New York Times features this recipe with the same name. But it’s now a subscriber- only recipe on their site so this was pulled from the website below. Having made this multiple times, five pounds of tomatoes aren’t required. I’ve only used 2 lbs. of tomatoes and cut back on the salt, and it turned out wonderfully.

What to do during this insane heat wave (except get out of Dodge)? Grab a book, iPad or Kindle. Here are a few recommendations from our residents. Feel free to share what you’ve been reading lately.
“I Know an Old Lady: A Coming of Age Novel” by Margaret Standafer and “The Marlow Murder Club by Robert Thorogood. Thorogood was the creator of the BBC series “Death in Paradise.” “I really enjoyed both of these. I read them on a Kindle,” said Doris Hechler.
“Fellowship Point” by Alice Elliott Dark: “The novel is set in Maine. Dark is spot on in her observations of contemporary times, friendships and aging. I highly recommend this. It is a most enjoyable book,” said Bette Gips.
