In this monthly series, local realtor Andrea Schutter Riebeling does a Q & A with local business leaders about what inspires them. This month’s interview is with Amanda Jane Avis of Round Top’s Rustic Barn Retreats:

1.) What is your business?

Rustic Barn Retreats

2.) How did you get started?

We began searching for land to have a second home on and realized the permitting process in Texas is incredibly fast. We are also in Arizona, and our original plan was to build near the Grand Canyon. That is still in the works, but we chose to focus on Round Top because we had approval to build so quickly. In doing so, we’ve fallen even more in love with the area and the people and would love to be there full time.

3.) How long have you been in business? We are a new family business. Both my husband and I come from business ownership before this venture. He is in the technology industry, while I’ve been a professional dancer and fitness/ wellness instructor and studio owner for 22 years.

4.) Is this a family or female business? This is a family business and we are excited to build a family legacy for our children and beyond.

5.) What kind of service do you provide?

Rustic Barn Retreats is a barn conversion from an 1870s barn that was moved from Indiana. The structure is large and open, while still providing beauty and intimacy for those wanting to host a family reunion, wedding, corporate retreat, artistic retreat, stay for the antique shows, or simply enjoy the serenity of Round Top.

6.) Tell me something unique about your business?

This evolved from my love and adoration of Round Top when I would drive between Austin and Houston. We had no firm intentions of this becoming a business. Also, we approach our new business with unique experiences as small business owners. We are from very different industries but align in our desire to connect with our new community and be something it is proud of.

7.) What is your background?

I am a dancer, Pilates and yoga instructor. I’ve danced all my life and taught for a few decades, after owning my fitness studio in LA. I immediately fell in love with Texas and knew I wanted to return. I’m blessed to be able to do so now.

8.) What do you suggest to others who want to venture out and take a leap of action in the future of their career?

I suggest chatting with as many people in your field as possible and to take notes.

9.) Do you believe in college, trade school, or any training? I absolutely believe in education. I also believe that real life, in the job experience is vital when owning a business. I loved my time at UCLA as a dance major and cheerleader. Did it help me in business or further my dance career? Maybe… but I do feel, especially now that I’m a mommy, that trade schools are essential and encouraging children to explore the options that trades provide is paramount.

10.) How did you decide to make Round Top your home?

The people, The beauty, The calmness, The reminder that hustle and bustle isn’t really necessary. The connection I feel to the community is so sincere and that is something I treasure. The people.
