Keep Texas Beautiful (KTB) presented Fayette County with an award for outstanding achievements in recycling in 2022.

KTB, a non-profit aimed at beautifying Texas, offers grants and assistance to recycling programs across the state. Rachel Hering, KTB’s outgoing director, presented the award at the Fayette County Commissioners Court meeting on Thursday, Feb. 9.

Hering said Fayette County recycled more than a million pounds of material last year.

“That’s a great accomplishment and I couldn’t let it go unnoticed,” Hering said.

“This is just the stuff we recycle through Keep Texas Beautiful,” said Fayette County Recycling Center Manager Paul Zapalac. “This doesn’t include paint, scrap metal brush, aluminum cans – all of that stuff is not included.

“You are recycling things that we don’t even see recycled in Amarillo or Abilene,” Herring said. “You should be really, really proud of what you’ve built here in Fayette County, and we’re definitely proud to be a part of it.”

Hering introduced her successor, Zoe Killian to the Commissioners Court.

“Zoe is new and I wanted her to see a really top-notch program,” Hering said.

In addition, Hering said Burleson County officials visited the Fayette County Recycling Center that day.

“They are starting a recycling program, and a lot of the reason is based on seeing what you’ve been able to accomplish,” Hering said.
