Combined Community Action will be holding its 18th Annual Casino Night on June 9 at St. Michael’s Pavilion in Winchester. The doors will open at 5:30 p.m. and gaming will begin at 7 p.m. Bingo games have been added this year.

Tickets are $75 and will include dinner, drinks (BYOB), reserved seating and 30,000 gaming chips. Tickets for $50 can be purchased and are for dinner, drinks (BYOB) and 10,000 gaming chips.

There will also be a silent auction and door prizes. The top prize is a $1,000 Southwest Airlines gift card.

Winchester Area Civic Assoc.

The Winchester Area Civic Association would like to invite everyone to come to

view the improvements on the evening of Wednesday, June 14 starting at 6:30 p.m. Barb and Richard Schafer will be your Neighbors Night Out host. Light refreshments will be served. Come and see the renovations.

St. Michael’s Annual Picnic

The annual picnic of St. Michael’s Church in Winchester will be held on Saturday, June 17 at St. Michael’s Park. Activities will take place outside and in the air-conditioned pavilion.

The beer and soda stand will open at 3 p.m. along with the washer tournament registration and the bounce house and face painting for the children.

The barbecue meal, consisting of pork or chicken barbecue, barbecue sauce, potato salad, noodles, beans, bread, iced tea, and dessert will be served by the plate at $15 each. To go plates will be available. The meal will be served from 5 to 6:30 p.m.

A live auction will begin at 6 p.m.

A portion of the picnic proceeds are dedicated to Congregational Tuition Assistance for Lutheran Schools.

Round Table Book Club

The Winchester Round Table Book Club will meet Tuesday, June 20, at 7 p.m. at Zilss Hall. The club will be discussing “The Fire and The Ore” by Olivia Hawker. A true story of three women in the Utah Territory in 1857. Everyone is welcome.

Quilt Block Paint Class

You may now register for the next class, which will be held on June 24 from 10 a.m.

to 4 p.m. at Zilss Hall in Winchester.

If you would like to paint a 2x2 foot block to hang on an exterior wall, gate or fence please register on the website, www. quiltblocktrail.com. All supplies are provided and the cost for the class is $75. You will need to bring a sack lunch and wear appropriate clothing for painting. Templates are provided for you to choose your design, or you may bring your own.

TWHS Scholarship Program

The Texas Wendish Heritage Society (TWHS) appreciates support given to its scholarship program. All Texas Wendish Heritage Scholarship funds are received through fundraising projects and donations.

The TWHS scholarship program is available to students of Wendish descent and encourages students to learn more about their Wendish heritage.

Applicants must be enrolled in an accredited college, university, or trade school for Fall 2023 semester. 20232024 scholarship applications are available online at texaswendish. org and on the Texas Wendish Facebook Page. The entire process is online and must be submitted digitally by the deadline; 5 p.m. on Saturday, July 14, 2023.

Recycling Trailer

The Winchester Recycling trailer is located on the side of Zilss Hall on Memorial Hall Street. Please place your recycling in the appropriate bins. We would appreciate it if you made sure that you close the bins so that any trash will remain in the bins and not blow out.

Barn Board Quilt Trail

This summer is the perfect time to drive out to Winchester, pick up a map at Murphy’s or Zilss Hall, and enjoy viewing the sixty-five quilt blocks displayed in our area.

The trail is self-driven, available at your convenience, and is a wonderful way to spend an afternoon viewing quilt blocks on fences, gates, barns, and houses that can be seen from the road.

Winchester Barn Board Quilt Trail maps may be picked up at the Texas Quilt Museum, Casino Hall, the Wendish Museum, quilt stores, and other businesses in Giddings, Smithville, and La Grange.

Zilss Community Hall

Anyone wishing to rent Zilss Hall should contact (512) 434-0292. The hall is inexpensive and air conditioned and is now available for rentals following renovations.

The Little Free Library

The library is on the covered patio at Zilss Hall and is always open and has a variety of authors. Space is limited, so please, if you donate a book(s) look through the current selection and take as many as you leave. Also on the patio, there is a bulletin board available to post event notices.

First United Methodist Church

The Winchester First United Methodist Church has service on the first and third Sunday of the month at 8:30 a.m. The Rev. Patricia Zaiontz-Newcomer is the pastor.

Shiloh Baptist Church

St Michael’s Lutheran Church

The weekly worship service takes place at 9 a.m. on Sunday morning in the sanctuary. Following the worship service, you may gather in the Education Building for Bible Study and Sunday School beginning at 10:15 a.m. You are welcome to visit.
