CattleWomen Announce Winners of Beef For Father’s Day Essay Competition
Each June, Texas Cattle-Women conducts a statewide beef promotion activity known as Beef for Father’s Day. Claiming Father’s Day as a great day to prepare beef, CattleWomen kick off summer as a tasty grilling season. What dad doesn’t like to BBQ?
As an affiliate of Texas CattleWomen, the Navidad Valley local group conducts an annual essay competition. All area sixth grade students were invited to participate in an essay contest celebrating dads and father-figures. The topic was: “What makes my Dad or Father figure so great and why he should be awarded a beef gift certificate?”
The prizes were: 1st prize - $60 beef gift certificate, 2nd prize - $50 beef gift certificate, and 3rd prize - $40 beef gift certificate. Beef gift certificates can only be used to purchase beef either at a local meat market, restaurant or grocery store. All entries were from the NVCW service area of Fayette, Lavaca or Colorado counties.
The winners this year were: 1st place-Kalyn Mc-Dougal (Flatonia ISD), 2nd place-Cullen Mikulencak (Moulton ISD), and 3rd place-Mallory Bonner (St. Rose of Lima Catholic School).
The Navidad Valley CattleWomen is a non-profit organization that supports and promotes the beef industry. The Navidad Valley local works to support local youth with scholarships and provide quality information on the industry and how to incorporate beef into a healthy diet. Additionally, they work to support the community with targeted outreach projects that include a beefy twist.
Their next big event is the 5K Ranch Run which is their major scholarship fundraiser. The run will be held on Aug. 5 in conjunction with Schulenburg Festival. For more information on NVCW and to register for the Ranch Run, visit their website www.nvcw.org.
