Carmine History

A Piece of Carmine History about services offered-Part 3: Hotels, Bed & Breakfasts, Barber Shops, and Beauty Shops Two Hotels were available in the early years of Carmine, which was founded in 1883. One was built by Dr. Benjamin Jackson Thigpen. It was a 2-story house that served as his family residence and also as a hotel and eating house. It was located at the current address of 134 W. Thigpen. It was torn down in 1949.

The Otto Schuddemagen Hotel was located at 111 E. Thigpen and also served as a saloon. It was torn down in 1928 and Neese Pharmacy was built on that plot. Parts of the above are from The History of Carmine written by Norma Bauer, remembrances of Nathalie Ponfick Rothermel, A History of Carmine by Tony Buban, and Diana Wunderlich.

Bed and Breakfasts became popular in the early 1990s. Diana and Reuben Wunderlich opened Sugar Hill Retreat in 1992 and welcomed guests for about 20 years. Thelma & Val Hinze provided accommodations at Hinze’s Home Place from 1994 until 2022. James and Jane Press own Pecan Grove Inn, which opened on April 15, 2000. MS-150 bike riders were the first customers and they are still welcoming guests.

Betty and Lyndon Sommer had The Heritage Haus Bed and Breakfast in the early 2000s. Aunt Clara’s House was owned by Paula and “Big Bear” Manns for several years. Dr. A.C. Miller’s house was a bed and breakfast known as Del Sole’ by Beverly Martinets from 2014-2019. Calvin and Emily Sellers and Gene and Boo Goolsby also host guests.

Other lodging in the area includes Cottages on Cedar Creek, Cala Lily, Carmine Coop, Solid Rock Ranch Retreat, Hillside Acres on 237, The Bunkhouse, The Front Porch, and The Vintage Hideaway.

There is also an RV park in Carmine called Round Top-Carmine RV Park.

Barber Shops were owned by Rudy Pietz and Erich Braun. They were both at the same location along Sylvan St. Pietz possibly began in the early 1900s and continued until 1943. Braun took over soon after that and continued until the mid-1980s. The building had structural damage in the 1990s when an 18-wheeler truck crashed into it. It was then torn down.

The first known Beauty Shop was located on the east side of Hauptstrasse south, between Sylvan St. and Augsburg Ave. It was owned by Maude “Tut” Werchan Doleshal in the 1940s. Ida Bell Light Rauch was also a beautician at Tut’s shop while her husband was in the service. Sedalia’s Beauty Shop, owned by Sedalia Ullrich was in the small building between 107 and 125 Augsburg Ave. It was open throughout 1964. Carol Sommerfeld was the owner of Carol’s Hair Fashions from May, 1986 until later in 1992. It was located on the east corner of Hauptstrasse and Sylvan St. Patti Mertz fixed hair in an office room of Zing’s Restaurant in the 1990s on Hwy 290 E.
