American Legion McBride Post Places More Than 1,250 Flags on Graves of Deceased Veterans
Schulenburg area veterans gathered at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, May 22, to honor deceased veterans of all eras buried in local cemeteries.
Each year, members of the Schulenburg American Legion Post come together to pay their respects to those that have passed on. This year over 1,250 flags were placed on veterans graves. The St. Rose Cemetery, and Schulenburg City Cemetery and Schulenburg Community Cemetery have the largest numbers of veterans’ graves. However, the group visited other local cemeteries and placed flags to honor deceased veterans for their service to our country.
These local cemeteries include Moravia, St. John, Corinth, Navidad Valley, Freyburg Salem, Freyburg Methodist, Swiss Alp Lutheran, Ammannsville, Dubina, Old High Hill, and St. Mary High Hill, amongst others.
The two High Hill cemeteries were handled by the Leo Dittrich Sr. family as an annual tribute to their veteran father. The James Sommers family places flags on graves at Corinth and Navidad Valley cemeteries every year as well. Local veterans buried in other cemeteries also had flags placed on their graves, namely Hallettsville, Hostyn, Flatonia and others.
Local organizations have generously donated to the veterans flag fund, managed by the Schulenburg American Legion McBride Post, which funds the project. As a yearlong honor, flags are left on the graves. Anyone noticing a tattered flag during the year is asked to remove it and dispose of it properly.
