American Legion Auxiliary Unit 102 Celebrates 107 Years
The American Legion Auxiliary Unit 102 gathered with the American Legion Post earlier this month to celebrate the 107th birthday of the American Legion H.J. Ehlers Unit 102. The American Legion and the American Legion Auxiliary is an active and vital part of La Grange, serving the veterans in our community. Throughout the history of La Grange, the community has united to form this vital organization.
The Unit was formed in March, 1919 and named in honor of Hugo Ehlers, one of La Grange’s finest and best loved young men “who stayed over there” as stated in the La Grange Journal, April 17, 1948. The following year, November, 1920 the Ehlers Unit 102 added the American Legion Auxiliary with 15 chartered members. Their first action was to adopt Veteran patients hospitalized at Camp Logan (Houston) during the World War (I) sending them gifts as well as additional gifts to others hospitalized in Kerrville and San Antonio. This collection of care for veterans and to promote helpfulness and goodwill in the community continues today.
The Auxiliary welcomes anyone interested in learning more about the local Auxiliary and upcoming activities to join for a light meal and meeting on April 8 at 6 p.m. at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Hall located at 500 Veterans Memorial Drive (Fairgrounds) in La Grange.
