The community is invited to attend the dedication and unveiling of the Zilss Memorial Hall Texas Historical Marker on Sunday, June 14 beginning at 2 p.m. at 8945 FM 153, Winchester. This event is hosted by the Winchester Area Civic Association.

The marker recognizes how Emil Zilss deeded the former school building to the community center group, which renamed it Zilss Memorial Hall and uses it for civic events, fundraisers, and community activities that helps support projects such as the volunteer fire department.

Join to honor and preserve the local history for future generations. The annual WACA Ice Cream Social will be held following the ceremony.

St. Michael’s Annual Picnic 

St. Michael’s Lutheran Church annual church picnic will be held in Historic Downtown Winchester on Saturday June 20. Everyone is welcome.

The beer and soda stand will be open from 3 p.m. to closing for a free-will donation. Washer pitching tournament registration will be at 3 p.m. A bounce house and arts and crafts for kids will be available from 3-5 p.m. 4-H will be selling popsicles from 3:30-6:30 p.m. The Washer Pitching Tournament begins at 4 p.m.

A BBQ meal served by the plate from 5-6:30 p.m. for a free-will donation. To-go plates will also be available. The meal includes BBQ pork or chicken, barbecue sauce, potato salad, noodles, beans bread, iced tea and dessert.

A live auction will begin at 6 p.m. Any remaining BBQ will be sold by the pound at 6:30 p.m.

A portion of the picnic proceeds are dedicated to Congregational Tuition Assistance for Lutheran Schools.

CCAAnnual Casino Night 

The 21st annual CCA Casino Night organized by Combined Community Action and Meals on Wheels Rural Capital Area will be held in Winchester at St. Michael’s Hall located at 310 Frio St. on June 5. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and gaming begins at 7 p.m.

VIP tickets are $75 and includes dinner, drinks/BYOB, and $30,000 in gaming tokens. General Admission is $50 and includes dinner, drinks/BYOB, and $10,000 in gaming tokens. Come try your luck and support a great cause.

America 250 on Flag Day 

The community is invited to come together in patriotic celebration on Sunday, June 14, for a special America 250 Flag Day Celebration at Zilss Memorial Hall, 8945 FM 153, Winchester. This meaningful event will honor the rich history of our nation while celebrating local heritage with the dedication of the Zilss Memorial Hall Historic Marker. The dedication ceremony will begin promptly at 2 p.m., marking an important milestone in preserving the hall’s historical significance for future generations.

Bring your family, wear your red, white, and blue, and join in honoring our nation’s past while building community for the future. Guests can also enjoy an old-fashioned ice cream social, offering a sweet way for families, friends, and neighbors to gather in fellowship while commemorating America’s 250th anniversary.

The event promises an afternoon filled with patriotism, history, and community spirit as residents celebrate both the American flag and the legacy of one of Winchester’s treasured landmarks.

Winchester Area Civic Association encourages everyone to attend and participate in this memorable Flag Day event as Winchester proudly celebrates America 250.

Women’s Luncheon 

The June luncheon for the Winchester Women will be on Thursday, June 11 at 11 a.m. at Murphy’s Steakhouse in Winchester. Please come and bring a friend. Contact Bobbie Hajek, at (970) 639-1646, to make reservations so she can let the restaurant know the number of participants.

America’s 250th Birthday The Winchester Area Civic Association is placing American flags along FM153 in Winchester as a patriotic display to celebrate its 250th Birthday. You can sponsor a flag for a $30 donation. Join in honoring our nation by being a part of a beautiful patriotic display that celebrates our history, unity and community spirit.

Quilt Block Class 

If you are interested in taking a quilt block class, the next class will be scheduled on June 13 and runs from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. with a cost of $90. All supplies are provided for you to finish a 2’x2’ block. Design templates are available. Please dress appropriately for painting. Bring your lunch and beverage. There is a refrigerator, microwave, and Keurig available. Class size is limited to 10. To register for a class go to www.quiltblocktrail. com and complete the registration form. Your registration is not confirmed until payment is received. After filling in the registration form you may pay by credit card. Look for “click here” to complete the transaction. Winchester Quilt Block Trail Drive out to Winchester, pick up a map at Murphy’s or Zilss Hall, and enjoy viewing the 65 quilt blocks displayed in our area on the Quilt Block Trail. The trail is self-driven, available at your convenience, and is a wonderful way to spend an afternoon viewing quilt blocks on fences, gates, barns, and houses that can be seen from the road. Winchester Barn Board Quilt Trail maps may be picked up at the Texas Quilt Museum, Casino Hall, the Wendish Museum, Zilss Hall, Murphy’s Steakhouse, quilt stores, and other businesses in Giddings, Smithville, and La Grange.

Zilss Community Hall 

Anyone wishing to rent Zilss Hall should contact (512) 434-0292. The hall is inexpensive and air conditioned and available for rentals.
