Gary Kainer won the election for Director of Zone 5 on the Fayette Soil and Water Conservation District (FSWCD) board.

The election took place on Tuesday, Oct. 14. FSWCD President Lee Fritsch reported that 162 people voted in the election. Kainer collected 115 votes. His opponent Mark Brown gathered 47 votes.

Kainer will succeed Howard Frick, who had represented Zone 5 since 2009. Zone 5 covers the area of the county south of the Colorado River and east of US 77.

Kainer and his family were in the dairy business in Fayette County for 45 years. Today they manage a feeding operation along with a cowcalf operation. He has also been a member of the Fayette County Area Go-Texan Committee for 20 years. The state’s Soil and Water Conservation Districts were established in 1939 in the wake of the Great Depression and the devastating Dustbowl. Lawmakers set up these districts to protect soil and surface water resources. Today, they help administrate state and federal programs that assist landowners with conservation projects. The districts work closely with the Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS), which is part of the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
