Freeze Miser Saves The Day Again
Freeze Miser saved the day again at Behlen residence in Cozy Corner.
I discovered these Texasmade devices a few years ago and I can’t praise them enough. This is not a paid endorsement (although if the folks at Baker Products in Kingsbury wanted to sponsor this column, I don’t think we’d turn them down).
So what, exactly, is the Freeze Miser? It’s a product that prevents water pipes from freezing in cold weather. It attaches to the end of any standard water faucet. You attach the device and turn the water on. When the temperature drops below 37º F,, the device allows water to drip. The colder it gets, the more it drips. When the temperature rises above 37º, it stops dripping. Once the threat of freezing temperatures passes, you can disconnect the device and store it away until next time.
The temperature dropped as low as 17º F during this last hard freeze, and my water stayed flowing the entire time.
The Freeze Miser only drips as much as it needs to prevent the water from freezing inside the pipes. You can set it up and forget about it without worrying about it causing a muddy mess under your faucet.
I have four of them - one for each of my outside faucets. On two of the faucets that I use regularly for watering plants, I’ve installed a “Y” fitting so that I can put a Freeze Miser on one end and the water hose on the other. That way, I can use the finger valve to turn the water hose on and off without always having to unhook the Freeze Miser from the faucet.
They cost about $30 a piece, depending on the supplier. They’re worth every penny to me if I don’t have to crawl under my house to fix a broken pipe, or worse, hire a plumber.
Many of the local hardware stores, farm and ranch stores and garden centers sell them. You can also buy them online from Amazon or directly from the Freeze Miser website: www.freezemiser.com.
