Fayette County Native Rodney Koenig Given Lifetime Achievement Award

Mr. Koenig is an esteemed attorney of more than 50 years who is presently an of counsel in Houston for Norton Rose Fulbright US LLP, a large, fullservice international law firm based in Europe. Boasting extensive expertise in the areas of estate planning, international estate planning and administration, charitable trusts, insurance trusts, foundations, and more, he currently focuses his practice on matters such as representing trust fiduciaries and beneficiaries in controversy, administration and tax, and retirement plans and IRA distributions for clients. He is a retired partner of Fulbright & Jaworksi, LLP, which combined with Norton Rose Fulbright, also in Houston. Additionally, Mr. Koenig briefly gained expertise in academia as an assistant professor of Naval Science at Auburn University from 1965 to 1967.

A frequent speaker in his field, Mr. Koenig has discussed topics such as estate planning for non-resident aliens, charitable planning, and philanthropy at various professional conferences, Universities, and roundtables. He has also contributed numerous articles to scholarly journals.

A lifelong resident of Texas, Mr. Koenig has served his community as a member of the board of directors of the American Heart Association’s Houston division, the Fayette Heritage Museum, and the St. Mark’s Medical Center Foundation. He is also active with the Crawford and Hattie Jackson Foundation, the Orton Foundation, the Gray Foundation, the Williams Foundation, the Midshipman’s Foundation, of which he is President, as well as a former president of the Houston Navy League, former co-chairman of the Planned Giving Advisory Council at the University of Texas, and a trustee of the James Dick Foundation for the Performing Arts in Round Top. He served for a number of years on the Lutheran Foundation of the Southwest as Treasurer, and served on the corporate board of Texas Lutheran University. He has served as State President of German-Texan Heritage Society, and has written a column for over 30+ years entitled “Leave Your German Mark” for such Society’s Journal. Mr. Koenig is fluent in German. These are just some of the many organizations Mr. Koenig has lent his time and expertise to over the years.

An alumnus of the University of Texas, Koenig began serving as a midshipman at UT Austin in 1958 and began his active duty as a Naval Officer in the U.S. Navy in 1962, the year he acquired his bachelor’s degree. He spent five years on active duty as a chief engineer and bridge officer on USS Braine (DD630) a destroyer during the Vietnam War, and taught for the Navy at Auburn University. He later advanced to Captain in the Judge Advocate General Corps in the U.S. Navy Reserve between 1967 and 1989, from which he is retired.

Mr. Koenig is married to Mary MacDonald Koenig. They collectively have four children and three grandchildren. Children are Erik Koenig, Jon (“JT”) Koenig, Jill Maytorena and Joshua Mishler, and grandchildren are Sierra Maytorena, Noah Maytorena and Nathan Maytorena. The Koenigs reside in West University Place and have a weekend home in La Grange.

They have created endowed Scholarships at University of Texas at Austin, at the UT School of Law and at the University of Houston, for midshipmen, law students, and German students respectively.
