As the oldest of five children, Dr. Amy Gutierrez-Cerelli often helped take care of her younger siblings. And by her mid-teens, she knew that medicine was her calling in life.

“I originally thought I would specialize in pediatric medicine, but while in medical school, I found that I also enjoyed procedures and other aspects of adult medicine, too,” said Gutierrez-Cerelli. “So family medicine was the logical choice for me to pursue so that I could treat patients throughout their lives.”

Dr. Gutierrez-Cerelli is a board certified family medicine physician, and brings her passion for family care to the La Grange Family Health Center starting July 6. She will see patients of all ages, and especially enjoys women’s, adolescent and pediatric care.

“We are thrilled to have Dr. Gutierrez-Cerelli join the practice,” said Dr. Wess Blackwell, La Grange Family Health Center. “She brings a wealth of experience, including corporate medicine, urgent care, and military medicine. And her medical Spanish will also be beneficial for those patients who are more comfortable describing their health conditions in Spanish.”

Born in Victoria and educated in Texas, Dr. Gutierrez-Cerelli graduated from Angleton High School, earned her B.S. from the University of St. Thomas in nearby Houston, and her M.D. from the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio.

While Dr. Gutierrez-Cerelli most recently practiced in San Antonio, she is no stranger to the La Grange and Giddings area. Her parents have lived in nearby Warda for 25 years, and her brother and sister-in-law have raised their family and run a business in La Grange. “While Jason, my husband, and I love San Antonio and have adult daughters still there, we are looking forward to transitioning our work to a rural community. Jason hopes to have a local dentistry practice soon, so this community is a great fit for us to enjoy a quieter life with our son and extended family,” continued Dr. Gutierrez-Cerelli.

The couple purchased 100+ acres adjacent to her parents’ Warda home, and are settling in to ranch life. There are cattle on the property, and Dr. GutierrezCerelli, sometimes called Dr. G., also has an interest in conservation, vegetable gardening and bee keeping. Traveling in their RV and fishing are also activities that the family enjoys. Her value of family is part of what makes Dr. GutierrezCerelli a successful physician. “I treat each of my patients like family,” said Gutierrez-Cerelli. “I build a relationship and trust with them, treating them how I would want my own family to be treated.”

“All of us at St. Mark’s Medical Center (SMMC) are eager for Dr. Gutierrez-Cerelli to start her practice and boost access to primary care,” said SMMC President and CEO, Mark Kimball. “More access will help improve the overall health of our community,” Kimball added.

Early in Dr. G.’s career, a mentor told her, “Listen to the patient, and they’ll tell you what’s wrong.” Dr. Gutierrez-Cerelli still follows this advice with her patients, and especially with the first visit, patients can expect a thorough discussion about their health and lifestyle behaviors. “I am an advocate of healthy living,” she continued.“Eating well, exercising and practicing prevention are the basics of good health.”
