County’s Plans for America’s 250th Anniversary Continue to Build
Plans are coming together for a celebration in Fayette County next July 4 to mark the Nation’s Semiquincentennial (250th anniversary).
County Judge Dan Mueller organized a committee that met last Wednesday, Aug. 13, to begin arrangements for the celebration.
Mueller said the celebration will include a play about the history of Fayette County.
“It’ll be a great play,” Mueller said. “It will be performed at the school (in La Grange), and the kids will be partaking in it.”
In addition Mueller said volunteers will plant 250 “liberty trees” throughout the County.
“We’re going to have a little plaque by each tree stipulating that these trees were planted in the year 2026 in celebration of America’s 250th birthday,” he said. “We’re going to work with 4-H, FFA, and Boy Scouts. It’ll be a coordinated effort.”
Mueller said many of the trees will be planted in prominent locations, such as at the schools in Fayette County.
There will also be a coloring contest for the school children in Fayette County with one young artist to be named the county-wide winner. Organizers are also planning a health walk, Mueller said, and a window decorating contest for businesses in the County.
Capping off the festivities will be a July 4 celebration on the courthouse square.
“It’ll probably be in the evening hours so that it wouldn’t hurt St. John or Round Top,” Mueller said, referring to the annual July 4 Picnic at St. John Catholic Church south of Schulenburg and the annual Round Top Fourth of July Celebration.
Mueller said the Nation’s Bicentennial Celebration in 1976 was a most memorable occasion for everyone who experienced it.
“You couldn’t go into any business without seeing memorabilia or signs about the Bicentennial,” he said.
Mueller said he hopes the Nation’s Semiquincentennial will be just as memorable.
