1976: Leopards Win District Championship
The La Grange Leopards chased 30 runs across the plate on 26 base knocks and swiped 22 bases while three hurlers doled out only five hits between them as Coach Steve Scarmardo’s lads handily won the overall District 25-AA baseball championship, 11-1 and 19-4, over Luling’s Eagles. The double bill was played on Blinn Field at Brenham because the Luling ballpark was still moist from a recent rain. Mike Pechal hurled the six-inning opener for the Leps, permitting only one lone safety, while his mates were collecting 13 off Rudy Montana and reliever Bobby Robbert. Pechal fanned 11 and walked four. Bert Vasut went four rounds for La Grange in the nightcap, kayoing six, and Kenny Hatfield hurled the last inning, striking out one. Petitions bearing the signatures of 523 people seeking stricter enforcement of the city’s dog ordinance or revision of the code with more teeth in it were presented to La Grange City Council.
