1976: New Doctor to Set Up Shop Here
Dr. Bill Nolan, who hailed from Tulsa, Okla., was expected to arrive in La Grange at the end of June to set up residency in the former remodeled Dr. J.C. Guenther Clinic building and start practicing medicine around mid-July. This news was reported by Lloyd Kolbe, the chair of the La Grange Chamber of Commerce doctors’ committee. Dr. Nolan graduated at the top of his class at Rush University Medical College.
A 65-year-old Brenham man remained in critical condition in an Austin hospital and another male from Brenham was in the La Grange Jail following a shooting at a north side tavern here. Fayette County sheriff’s officers and city police said the victim was shot through the upper lip, with the slug exiting through the back of his head. He was taken to Fayette Memorial Hospital and then transferred to Brackenridge Hospital in Austin, where he was reported in critical condition at midweek. The shooting occurred at Enda Harris’ Place on E. Guadalupe St., about 11 p.m. It is believed to have stemmed from an argument about money. The two men had driven to La Grange in the same car. The alleged shooter was apprehended near Burton in the same car.
An Ellinger area man was injured, apparently seriously, when the tractor he was operating on his farm overturned and pinned him to the ground late Friday afternoon. Hurt in the unfortunate mishap was Gilbert Bartosh, 68.
Local house movers Kana Brothers, Inc. transported the former Tietjen home from the Ellinger area to its new site at the International Festival-Institute at Festival Hill at Round Top. The building was cut into three sections for relocation next to the large outdoor concert stage.
A brick home and its slab had been jacked up by the side of the road four miles west of Fayetteville for several weeks, after being rescued from its original location in the path of the future cooling lake area for the Fayette Power Plant. The house was awaiting a new high-and-dry location.
A Schulenburg woman paid a fine, was sentenced to 30 days in jail (suspended) and ordered to pay restitution of $1,178 to the Texas State Department of Public Welfare. The defendant had allegedly made a fraudulent application for food stamps. County Judge Fritz Lobpries levied the punishment, and the case was prosecuted by County Attorney Dan R. Beck.
Ovie Roensch of La Grange announced his candidacy for county sheriff as a write-in candidate. Roensch, 41, was serving as constable of Precinct 1.
Six Fayette County towns got a total of $38,556 in checks from the Texas State Comptroller’s office, representing the 1% sales tax for the month of March. Carmine received $1,127; Fayetteville, $2,058; Flatonia, $3,541; Round Top, $455; and Schulenburg, $11,398. The 1976 first-quarter sum for La Grange was $28,056, counting the most recent rebate check of $19,977.
A meeting at La Grange City Hall gave 66 local residents an opportunity to present LCRA with opinions and suggestions on possible uses of the Colorado River for recreational purposes. Citizens expressed concern for the environmental impact of the Fayette Power Project and possible additional costs to taxpayers for any additional recreational facilities.
Funeral services were held for: Leon Heintschel Sr., 84, of Fayetteville; Mrs. Christine Flory Hymers, 77, of La Grange; Mrs. Selma Steinmann Muery, 86, a native of Swiss Alp; Ewald Weyand, 78, of Round Top; Paul W. Wilson, 70, of Rutersville; and Elo A. Muzny, 67, a native of Ellinger.
1st Lt. Michael R. Krenek was promoted to the rank of captain in the U.S. Air Force. Captain Krenek, his wife, Brenda, and seven-monthold son had returned from Okinawa, where Krenek had been assigned as an F-4 Fighter Weapons System Operator. Prior to Okinawa, he was stationed in Thailand. Upon completion of a 30-day leave, the captain was to report for assignment to a Tactical Air Command Fighter Air Base in England, where his family would join him.
Mr. and Mrs. Chas. H. Michalk Sr. of La Grange celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on June 17 in their home with their children. They were married in Winchester on June 11, 1916.
The children of Mr. and Mrs. Elmond Wessels honored their parents on their 25th wedding anniversary with a party at the Wessels home on Saturday, June 12. Mr. Wessels and Miss Rosalie Zajicek were married at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Plum by the late Rev. Edward J. Jansky on June 11, 1951.
Peggy Jean Johnson, a 1976 graduate of Flatonia High School, was awarded a $750 Clark Foundation Scholarship by the Texas Interscholastic League Foundation.
Maurice F. Granville, a former La Grange High School graduate who was chairman of Texaco, ranked as the sixth-highest-paid executive in the United States. His remuneration for the previous year was $672,000, according to Forbes magazine.
