Packed House Leads to Change of Venue at Hearing on Tax Break

So many people showed up to the public hearing last Thursday on the proposal to start offering tax abatements that county leaders had to move the meeting from the small commissioners courtroom inside the courthouse to the Fayette County Ag Building.

The proposal comes in response to interest from the company Candella Renewables that wants to build a solar power generating facility in the Muldoon area, called the 7V Solar Farm. Evan Horn, a tax specialist working for the project, said the project is not financially viable without a tax abatement deal with the County.

The agenda for the Feb. 13 meeting included three items concerning the tax abatement: first, a public hearing to gather input from citizens; second, a vote on a resolution to officially offer a tax abatement program (not only for the solar farm, but also for any business that wanted to apply for tax abatements); and third, guidelines for the tax abatement program.
