Success of Adult Students of English Celebrated

To the applause of their children, spouses, friends and teachers, 20 tenacious English language learners stepped up for recognition Friday night, November 22, in La Grange. All have been students in the Fayette Community Foundation’s evening ESL classes this past semester.

“We’re here to celebrate su éxito!” proclaimed program coordinator Julie Ardery.

No one headed for the EXIT sign at Celebrations on Main St., because the evening was just beginning. (And “exito” is Spanish for “success.”) Having contended with the demands of jobs and families, and interruptions of illness and car trouble, here were the students who had persisted and advanced in their English fluency this fall.

The English as a Second Language program for adults took place again this semester at the Randolph Recreation Center four nights a week. All ten of the program’s volunteer teachers were on hand November 22 to enjoy meeting the students’ families and present certificates of participation to their class members.
