Crowds Line Tracks as Historic Train Passes

A big crowd from all over showed up in Flatonia Wednesday morning to witness one of the last big steam locomotive still operating – Union Pacific’s restored #4014 (also known as one of the Big Boy series). It came through on its way to its ultimate destination of Cheyenne, Wyoming. The steam giant was due at 11:45 a.m. but actually appeared at 12:15 p.m. Although most people gathered on both sides of the tracks in town, the Big Boy stopped at the viewing platform area west of town for about 30 minutes. It pulled a train of about a dozen cars including sleepers and a dome car. The locomotive then powered up and headed for Houston to spend the night, blowing its horn all they way through town.
