Authorities Have to Cut Car to Free Injured Driver

Two people were hospitalized, including a one-year-old child, following an accident involving an 18-wheeler on SH 71 near Ellinger last Monday, Sept. 30. The wreck happened around 11:28 a.m. at the intersection of SH 71 and FM 955. According to a report from Texas Department of Public Safety Trooper April Galvan Usher, a tan 2004 Toyota Avalon driven by Celia Carranza Palacios, 63 of El Campo, was heading west on 71. A red 2016 Peterbilt truck pulling a belly dump trailer was stopped at a yield intersection on 71 attempting to turn left on to FM 955. The truck and trailer were owned by Joe Rogers Dozer Service. David Gene Foreman, 51 of West Point, was driving the rig.

Usher’s report said that Foreman failed to yield the right of way as he turned onto 955. Palacios performed an evasive maneuver in an attempt to avoid a collision. However, she struck the trailer with the front right side of her Toyota. The Toyota entered the ditch on the north side of 71, where it came to rest facing northeast.
