Tiny Parish Gets Lots of Help to Feed 4,500 for its Annual Holiday Picnic

Feeding 4,500 people takes a little bit of work, but it isn’t too bad with some good help - just ask Robert Besetzny, co-chairman of the St. John Picnic.

“We’ve got about 100 volunteers helping in the kitchen today,” Besetzny said last Thursday, July 4. “We couldn’t do it without them.”

The tiny parish of St. John holds its picnic every year on July 4. Thousands of people from all around the state make the annual pilgrimage. Only about 80 people belong to the parish, and Besetzny said about half of those are too old for the heavy lifting it takes to feed all the visitors.
