Post-Election Chaos in Fayetteville May Finally Be Getting Sorted Out

The race for Fayetteville mayor won’t be headed to a runoff after all. The news came after an election recount and prospects of a dice game to determine who gets on the ballot.

Carl Marino, a former councilman and mayor pro tem, collected the most votes in the May 4 city election with 81. His two opponents, incumbent Mayor Steven Cushing and challenger Lisa Simpson, tied for second with 43 votes each.

The following day City Secretary Janice Wasut reported that the City would conduct a mandatory recount (which turned out to be not-so-mandatory). She said that if both Cushing and Simpson wished to proceed with the runoff, they would throw dice to determine who gets on the ballot.

On Friday, May 10, the City issued the agenda for a special meeting on the following Wednesday, May 15. One item was to swear-in the other two newly-elected officials, Steve Pavlicek and Ronnie Pflughaupt. Another was to call a runoff for the mayoral election.
