In 1946, Frankie Joe Cernosek missed something like 127 days of school. When the seven-year-old second grader was absent from St. Michael’s Catholic School in Weimar, he was tucked into bed at the old two-story white wooden house his parents, Frank V. and Annie Kana Cernosek, rented several blocks from the train tracks downtown. With this dismal school attendance record, even his mother could not have predicted that in only a few short years her oldest son would earn honors in 4-H and FFA, become a local baseball legend and serve for 10 years as a highly respected teacher at Bishop Forest High School in Schulenburg.
