Newspapers, Conventions and Lots of Hospitality

Just a Thought

What happens when you combine several newspaper publishers, editors and other staff members with a great location in Fayette County? – A fabulous convention and a whole lot of fun!

You might see a few more unfamiliar faces around La Grange this weekend. Why? Well, the City of La Grange was chosen as the location for the South Texas Press Association’s 2019 Convention – with a little help from yours truly.

You see, after I came back to work at The Fayette County Record, I started attending the South Texas Press Association conventions each April. As with many organizations, after a few years, you get asked to serve as a board member. It wasn’t long and I was asked to be on the board of directors. Then in 2017 I was elected to the office of second vice president. As second vice president, I was in charge of the 2018 Better Newspaper Contest. On this board, once you are elected to an officer position, you are committed to a four-year stint. Year one, you are the second vice president and contest director, year two, you are the first vice president and convention chairman, year three, you are the president and year four, you are the chairman of the board.
