Plan to Use Tax Money To Help Hospital Could Be Headed for a Vote

A plan to try to help financially-strapped St. Mark’s Medical Center with property tax money took its first official steps last week.

A petition began being circulated, and as of Thursday already had about 85 signatures, to create a hospital district run by a local board of directors. The district would impose a property tax rate “not to exceed 25-cents per $100 valuation” of taxable property in Fayette County, with that money going to help fund St. Mark’s.

La Grange’s Michael Corker, vice chairman of the St. Mark’s Board of Directors, was one of those circulating the petition and he said he needed at least 100 signatures of registered voters before presenting the petition to the Fayette County Commissioners Court (a special meeting was called for Monday, April 8, at 3 p.m. for commissioners to consider the petition).
