$65 Million in Retail Purchases ‘Leaking’ Out of Area Annually

Folks who live and work in Schulenburg spend nearly $65 million a year on retail purchases somewhere else – that’s according to a study recently commissioned by the Schulenburg Economic Development Corporation.

The City plans to use the study to attract retail businesses that might be interested in capturing some of those dollars.

The study was part of a training course called Retail Academy attended by City Administrator Tami Blaschke-Walker and Councilman Chip Bubela. The data indicate that Schulenburg draws a daytime population of over 8,000 people coming from La Grange, Weimar, Columbus, Hallettsville, Moulton, Flatonia and Waelder.

The town’s census population stands at about 2,800 people. The number of people in town during the day swells due to an influx of workers, students and others doing business in Schulenburg.
