Remembering the Fayette Co. ‘Poor Farm’ As it Makes Way For New Second Chance

“Simon P. Ford, one of the survivors of the battle of San Jacinto, is said to be in poverty and rags at Muldoon, Fayette County, and must go to the poor farm. The Flatonia Argus makes an appeal for aid for the poor patriot. Mr. Ford is 83 years of age.”

Weimar Mercury 8 June 1895

What was left of the Fayette County Poor Farm on Reynolds Street in La Grange was demolished Thursday to make way for the new Second Chance headquarters.

Poor houses and poor farms and other categories of government attempts to provide care for those who couldn’t care for themselves can be traced back to “English Poor Laws” written in 1594 and expanded in 1601.
