‘Everyone’s Prayers’ Helping Hassel Fight Against ALS

Local Group Donates Quilt to Fundraiser Founded by Former Local Pastor

The Friends in Faith group at St. Paul Lutheran Church in La Grange is donating a beautiful quilt to support the fight against ALS. They made the donation in honor of the church’s former pastor, Rev. Bill Hassel, who has been living with the disease for 12 years.

Hassel served as St. Paul pastor from 1985 to 1997 before moving to Victoria and heading up First English Lutheran Church there. After years of suffering symptoms that seemed like arthritis or carpal tunnel syndrome, something happened one day that forced him to find out what was wrong – he dropped the communion tray during church services.

Doctors ruled out arthritis or carpal tunnel syndrome. They even tested him for Parkinson’s disease, which came back negative. Then in 2007 he got a grim diagnosis: amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, a neurological condition that weakens muscles eventually leading to death.
