Locals Keeping Eye on New Water Legislation

Fayette County Groundwater Conservation District general manager David Van Dresar said a bill currently under consideration in the Texas Legislature could make a big impact on water resources here.

The legislation in question is Senate Bill 1010 filed by State Senator Charles Perry of Lubbock. The bill applies to groundwater districts that overlie a common aquifer. The bill would prohibit such districts from making or enforcing a rule concerning groundwater production unless the other districts that overlie the aquifer also have the same rule.

“You can’t regulate groundwater regionally, it will not work,” Van Dresar told the district’s board of directors at a meeting on Monday, March 4..

“My opinion is that the Legislature still doesn’t understand that,” he said.
