Eighty-One Schulenburg Workers Lose Jobs as Plant Abruptly Closes

Monogram Foods shut down its pet treat plant in Schulenburg on Monday, March 4. The closure leaves 81 employees without a job.

In a press release issued Monday afternoon, the company said it unexpectedly lost a major customer and the only purchaser of the products made in Schulenburg. Monogram spokesperson Alix de Witt declined to name that company, but she said it was a major grocery chain.

“(The Schulenburg plant) produced a branded dog treat for them,” de Witt said. “It was one brand line for a particular grocery chain and the market didn’t take.”

The company notified employees on Monday morning. Employees we spoke with said they had no indication the plant was closing before Monday morning. One worker said the plant manager only found out Sunday afternoon.
