Zouzalik, Who Kept the Courthouse Running Smoothly For Years, Retires

Fayette County Commissioners presented courthouse maintenance manager Gene Zouzalik with a certificate of appreciation on his retirement from the county last Thursday, Feb. 28.

Zouzalik, with his grey beard and ever-present University of Texas baseball cap, is a familiar face at the courthouse. No one knows the nooks and crannies of Fayette County’s 128-year-old landmark better than him.

“I started this job (13 years ago) with, like, six hours of onthe-job training, and in the first week, I got lost in this building every day,” Zouzalik told the commissioners Thursday.

At the end of that first week, Zouzalik said his significant other asked how the job was going. He recalled telling her, “You wouldn’t believe how nice everybody is. No matter where I went, everybody bent over backwards to tell me what needed to be done and showing me how to do it. That’s when I knew my job was to make sure everybody else’s job was a little bit easier if I could.”
