Iconic Photos From 1890s are Subject of Talk at Library Saturday

The Fayette Heritage Museum and Archives’ latest exhibit, The Photography of Louis Melcher, will open Saturday, February 16, with a program that begins at 10:30 a.m. Melcher is best known for his iconic 1890s photographs of people and places in La Grange and the rural areas around O’Quinn. In her talk, Kathy Carter, retired director of the Fayette Public Library, Museum and Archives, will highlight these, as well as other favorite Louis Melcher images, many of which you will recognize.

Although many early professional photographers satisfied their creative energy with portrait photography, Melcher was prolific in documenting local everyday life in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

The Archives staff often incorporates Melcher’s photography into exhibits, but this will be the first time that the focus is entirely upon the work of this one photographer. The exhibit will showcase at least 150 photographs—both original and enlarged prints, as well as in a continuously looping slideshow.
