Study: Buckner’s Creek Flow Made Harvey Flooding Here Worse

Much of the water that flooded La Grange during Hurricane Harvey came from Buckner’s Creek and not the Colorado River, according to Fayette County Emergency Management Coordinator Janet Carrigan.

Carrigan announced the finding at a Commissioners Court meeting on Wednesday, Dec. 26. Carrigan assisted hydrologists from the National Weather Service (NWS) on a study of the flood. NWS will soon release a report on that study, Carrigan said, which could lead to federal funding for flood prevention work along the Buckner’s Creek watershed.

“During the flood, when we were evacuating Care Inn in La Grange and water was coming into town, the river gauge only showed 20 feet, but we know the flood stage is 48 feet,” Carrigan told the Record in an interview last Thursday.
