New Quilt Exhibits Set to Debut Here

The winter exhibits at the Texas Quilt Museum will feature top winners from the International Quilt Association’s judged show, a series of stunning pictorial works by one of the world’s best-known quilt artists, and a world premiere “seasonal” collection by members of the Studio Art Quilt Associates.

The exhibits “World of Beauty: IQA Prizewinners 2018,” “Stories of West Africa by Hollis Chatelain,” and “Season After Season” will run January 10-March 24, 2019.

In addition, Museum Curator Dr. Sandra Sider will give a free lecture called “Season After Season: Behind the Scenes” on February 23 at 3 p.m. (with Museum admission free beginning at 2 p.m.). She will also be signing copies of the new book from SAQA for which she was the editor, Art Quilts Unfolding: 50 Years of Innovation. Dr. Sider comments “With fascinating art quilts in Galleries II and III, and the gorgeous World of Beauty IQA prizewinners gracing Gallery I, we will definitely brighten your winter days.” Here’s a rundown of the exhibits:

World of Beauty:

IQA Prizewinners

These 32 quilts all took home a prize from the more than 600 entered and 325 finalists in the quilt world’s most prestigious annual competition. The show featured more than 20 different categories and $97,250 in cash (non-purchase) prizes, awarded at the 2018 International Quilt Festival Houston.

The quilts on display include Over the Waves by Setsuko Matsushima, which won the Founders Award. This unique combination of traditional patchwork and representational imagery stood out among all the other contestants. Mary Olson’s appliquéd quilt Perseverance took a category second prize, demonstrating her mastery of the process.
