Officer Ambushed, Shot, Locals Respond With Outpouring of Compassion

Officials have not yet released the name of the suspect who allegedly shot Fayette County Deputy Calvin “C.J.” Lehmann in the face at the Carter Motel in La Grange on Thursday afternoon, Nov. 1.

Lehmann, a 32-year-old Giddings native and single father of three, remains in critical condition at an Austin hospital. Fayette County Sheriff Keith Korenek said Lehmann has lost sight in one eye. In his latest report last Friday, Korenek said doctors were attempting to save Lehmann’s other eye.

La Grange Police Chief David Gilbreath said the suspect was also wounded in the gunfight. He remains in critical condition as well. The Texas Rangers are investigating the shooting.

The incident began around 5:45 p.m. last Thursday at the Dollar General Store on SH 159. Korenek said La Grange Police officers were attempting to serve a felony arrest warrant on a man inside the store when he put up a struggle.
