‘It’s Amazing to Watch His Life Come Back’

Hope, Support for Those With Parkinson’s From Local Survivor Michael Hess

Prior to Oct. 7, the last time Michael Hess had gotten up before the congregation at First Baptist Church in La Grange  was five years ago.

“I remember back then my hands were shaking so much I had to put them in my pockets,” Hess recalled.

That was a symptom of the Parkinson’s Hess was diagnosed with back in 2011.

More than 1.5 million people in the U.S. have Parkinson’s, a disease of the brain characterized by tremors and imbalance.

Fast forward to Oct. 7 and Hess (who is 77 and a Deacon Emeritus at First Baptist) was back in front of the church congregation, those tell-tale signs of Parkinson’s mostly gone. That Sunday he was interviewed in front of his fellow church members by Pastor Jonathan Smith about his journey back to health.
