Not-So-Promised Land?

Millions in Hurricane Recovery Money May Be Headed to Schulenburg Instead of LG

A federally-funded project to replace housing lost in La Grange during the Hurricane Harvey flood last year might actually be built in Schulenburg.

Back on Sept. 19, Texas Land Commissioner George P. Bush told Fayette County officials that his office “green-lighted” an $8.75 million project to replace 36 housing units that were damaged or destroyed in the Hurricane Harvey flood last year in La Grange. Bush’s agency, the Texas General Land Office, has been tasked with distributing $250 million in federal money to replace housing lost in Hurricane Harvey across Texas.

“The State has indicated they received an application for additional housing, right at $8.75 million, for 35 new units, and those units would be built in Schulenburg,” La Grange City Manager Shawn Raborn told the City Council at a meeting on Monday, Oct. 8.

GLO spokesperson Brittany Eck confirmed Raborn’s remark on Tuesday.
