Riding Along With a COP

In his prowl car and blue uniform, Dick Frenzel looks the proper copper, but look a little closer and down on the lower part of the vehicle doors, it says “Citizens on Patrol.”

“Ninety-nine percent of the people don’t know the difference,” he said Friday, “it’s a marked police car.” The car is a loaner to the COP program from the La Grange Police Department, retired from regular service when the force purchased a new SUV.

Frenzel is a friend and offered to let a reporter ride along on one of his patrols.

There are currently just a handful of COPs, he explained. There have been more, but the program has had some attrition over time. There will be a training academy for the program next spring and he is hoping it attracts some new recruits. Interested people should go by the Police Station and pick up an application, he said.
