The World Comes to Round Top

Sophia Vorek is a tympanist at Festival Hill this summer. A tympanist, by the way, is a person who plays the kettledrums.

Timpani, or kettledrums, are musical instruments in the percussion family. A type of drum, they consist of a membrane called a head stretched over a large bowl traditionally made of copper.

Unlike most of the other players in the orchestra, a percussionist may play different instruments in one piece of music. The most common percussion instruments in the orchestra include the timpani, xylophone, cymbals, triangle, snare drum, bass drum, tambourine, maracas, gongs, chimes, celesta and piano.
