‘Service of Thanksgiving’

La Grange Volunteer Fire Department held its annual Firefighters Memorial Service on Tuesday evening, May 8.

The department suffered no injuries or deaths in the last 12 months. Nor did the department lose any retired firefighters in the past year. Department chaplain Pastor J. Paul Bruhn noted during his invocation that the citizens of La Grange amazingly suffered no deaths or serious injuries during the Hurricane Harvey flood last summer.

“While this is a memorial service, it should be a service of thanksgiving,” said Bruhn.

Fire Chief Frank Menefee read the names of 107 local firefighers who have died since the department’s founding.

“Some of the men we honor here tonight were the foundation, the beginning of this department,” said La Grange mayor pro tem John “Honza” Cernosek in a speech. Cernosek is also a retired firefighter.
