La Grange Witness to 1946 Atomic Bomb Test Finally Tells His Story

“I’m probably one of the few atomic survivors still living, so I feel I owe it to the other sailors who were part of Operation Crossroads to tell our story,” says 90-yearold George Maxwell of La Grange.

Wearing no protective clothing or respiratory devices, George and other U.S. military personnel, scientists and reporters witnessed the Able atomic bomb test on the Bikini Atoll of the Marshall Islands in the Pacific Ocean on July 1, 1946. The stated purpose of the mission was to check the radioactive effects on test animals and blast effects on the target ships that included obsolete American vessels and captured German and Japanese ships.
